Remembering
The story of Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, dates back to the post-Civil War period when women began taking flowers to the graves of soldiers from that conflict. At a meeting of the Official Board of this church in November 1942, pastor Dr. L.L. Dunnington suggested that a board be erected in the vestibule of the church to recognize members serving during World War II.
Ultimately, two boards, each 24 inches wide and 26 inches high, became the honor rolls listing 217 names. Gold stars were placed beside eight of the names of those who died in service. When Robert C. Brown began collecting photographs of the military Honor Roll Billboards to be published several years ago, he included color photos of these from our church. A few men on the list are still active in our congregation, and the lists are on display each year.
